35mm Film Camera with full manual operation (adjustable f-stops and shutter speeds)Working light meter – either built-in to camera or handheldTripod and cable release, or timer on camera (optional)

Film: Ilford HP5+ (ISO 400) or Kodak Tri-X, recommended
  • If you still have a bulk loader from Art218, get 100 ft. of film You need enough for 35 rolls of 24 exp.
  • You will need 4-5 rolls of film right away to get started. Seek quickest option to get started and then order more as necessary.
  • Medium format film encouraged. 5-10 rolls 120 (ask instructor)
  • Large-format (optional) 4x5 (ask instructor) 
  • Single rolls of film can be purchased at SUPstore
Fiber base paper for all image prints
8x10 or 11x14, 100 Sheets. For starters, get either 25 or 100 sheets of glossy. If you prefer matte, start with a smaller box of glossy and buy matte paper later. Note that MG stands for “multigrade,” VC for “variable contrast,” which all means the same thing:
  • Ilford MG IV, double weight FB fiber 
  • Oriental Seagull VC FB Glossy (classic brand, high quality)
  • Adox Fine Print Vario Classic  VC FB 
  • Kentmere Fineprint VC FB Neutral Tone Glossy 
  • Arista EDU Ultra FB VC Glossy (great value, available only from www.freestylephoto.biz)
RC paper for contact sheets and film speed tests only.
For Contact Prints/Work prints : 8x10 RC multigrade paper, glossy (25-100 sheets, any brand okay)

TOWEL and apron (and/or grungy clothes to change into)Dishwashing Gloves (big heavy ones are the best)
Portfolio case or print sleeves with 3-ring binder
For Presentation:
Mat-board…must be archival, acid-free, or 100% rag, white-core
You will need enough to mat approx. 12 images, with backing and over-mat.
Consider purchasing big sheets with a friend and cutting these down

Other:

Three ring binder for negatives and handouts
Sharpie, pens, pencils, spiral notebook
Negative sleeves
Scissors
Can Opener
Masking Tape
Coat hanger (for burn tools)
3 pieces of 8x10 black cardboard or 4-ply black matte board (cheap stuff okay)
Dust/ film cloth, or canned air

Optional:
Lens cleaner and tissue
Film cleaner and tissue
